How to Get a Marriage License in Detroit, Michigan
Making your marriage official is an important part of getting married in Detroit. The process is straightforward, but knowing what to expect ahead of time makes everything feel smoother.
Marriage licenses are issued through the Wayne County Clerk’s Office. If one or both of you are Wayne County residents, you’ll apply there. If you’re both non-Michigan residents getting married in Detroit, you must apply in the county where your ceremony will take place.
Applications are handled at the Clerk’s Downtown Detroit office, and at least one of you must appear in person to complete the marriage license application.
When applying, you’ll need a valid driver’s license or state ID and a certified copy of your birth certificate. Both you and your partner must also provide your Social Security numbers as part of the required documentation.
The application fee is $30 if one or both of you are Wayne County residents, or $40 if you live outside Wayne County. You can pay via cash, money order, debit, or credit card. Personal checks are not accepted.
There is a three-day waiting period from the date of application before your ceremony can legally take place, unless that waiting period is waived by the Clerk’s office. Once issued, your marriage license is valid for 33 days and only within the State of Michigan.
Your ceremony must be performed by an approved officiant, such as a judge, magistrate, minister, or mayor, and two witnesses over the age of 18 must be present to sign the license.
After your wedding, the completed document must be returned to the County Clerk’s office so you can later request a certified copy of your marriage certificate for name changes or Social Security updates.
