One of my favorite parts of the wedding day is shooting the bridal details! It’s an important part of the story and I love having time to shoot the dress, shoes, jewelry, invitations, etc. These shots allow me to get warmed up for the day and get my creative juices flowing! I normally like to allow at least 45 minutes to an hour for this part of the day. I photograph a bride’s details in a way that matches and showcases the style of the entire wedding day. So, in some ways, the details really set the stage of the look of the whole day and I love having ample time to stylize and shoot everything from the dress to the shoes to grandma’s pearls!

Some of the most common bridal details are shoot include:

dress

veil

rings (all three)

shoes

bouquet

jewelry

invitation suite

The detail shots I create in the morning are THE ESSENTIAL IMAGES to really bring a creative element to your blog and especially your album! They truly tell the story of your day.  Think about a professional wedding film… it’s not just the ceremony and reception. They’re getting video of the venue, some hydrangeas blowing in the wind, the groom putting on his tie, guests walking into the ceremony. These details by themselves may be just ok but come to life when paired with authentic wedding clips!

All these little details: your earrings, your invitation suite, your flowers, the matching shirts your girls are wearing; all these things all crossed your mind and you feel they have a special place in your day. So my job is to capture them all! So in the morning, there are some details that need to be captured first thing before they either get placed on a finger or around a wrist!  There are a lot of ways to really dress up your bridal detail shots and also give me more creative potential!

Below are some creative items that I have seen in detail shots:

Ribbon    Bouquet Greenery    Ring Box(es)

Anything Monogrammed    Clutch   Perfume / Cologne

Hair Pieces   Locket    Written Vows

GATHER THE GOODS

If possible, collect all of your details before I arrive (more like the week before!) so that I can begin quickly have more time for some “getting ready” shots of you and your girls!

KEEP ALL THREE RINGS

The most common detail missing when I arrive is the rings! After I greet you, I’ll grab the box of detail elements and get to work! So please make sure all three rings are in there so I don’t have to go searching for them from moms or officiants!

MAJOR TIP : Don’t send the bouquets to the venue!!

Ask your florist to have the bouquets delivered to the bride and her bridesmaids so you can have your bouquet in the first look, all the portraits AND I can also include it in my detail shots. The flowers are going to be in every portrait until after the ceremony so I will want to make sure my detail shots include the flowers and their colors.

EXTRA ELEMENTS

Include extra elements that reflect the theme and “look” of the wedding day! For example, have your florist leave a few of your favorite elements of your bouquet separate (different colored flower heads, a strand of eucalyptus, etc). If your theme is more rustic, throw a piece of burlap in there! You can NEVER have too many things for me to play with for these photos! They make for beautiful, consistent album spreads!

ONE LAST TIP: YOUR DRESS COLOR

When it comes to your dress, I like to educate my brides right from the start about the color. I highly suggest choosing a dress that is ivory, off-white, antique white, champagne — anything but pure white! Pure white dresses almost always photograph BLUE. Go for the non-white dress and I promise it will still look like that bridal white gown that you’ve always imagined!
